Siamese cat – breed review

Siamese cat – breed review

Thailand is the motherland of Siamese cats, and are often mentioned in Thai legends . The Siamese s considered to be sacramental, respected in temples and protected by law, and participated in some rituals alongside the Royal Family. For this reason, these cats could not be exported, however over the time they found their way to Europe.

In Europe the Siamese appeared in the late 19th century, as the English consul brought the first cats as a gift from the Thai king.  A little while later the Siamese became know in the US and other countries. Today  there are over 40 varieties of Siamese cats among which there are many colours (black, purple, blue, cream and others).

The main characteristic of the Siamese breed is the colour and shape of their eyes. Representatives of the breed almost always have bright blue (sometimes green) eyes in an  almond-shaped form. Another important feature of Siamese cats is the colouring of their legs and “mask” on their face. This special colouring is explained by variations of skin temperature: at the lowest points it is lower, and therefore the fur is darker at those parts.

Siamese cat personality

Siamese cats are considered to be one of the most intelligent and curious among similar pets. This breed is quite unpredictable and prone to be jealous. Siamese cats like to be constantly in the company of an owner, and therefore will try to follow them everywhere. This breed is easy to train, and if an owner is patient, they can teach the cat to do different tricks.

The Siamese breed of cats are playful, affectionate and attached.  The cats demand constant attention from an owner. If your time is limited, then choose another breed.   If you also appreciate peace and  quiet  at home, then the Siamese is not the perfect choice, as they are very energetic.  Some owners even point out that these cats behave more like dogs than cats.

The Siamese cats like to “talk” with a person, so if the loud voice of cats makes you nervous , then again, search for another breed. Siamese cats are definitely not for everyone. But if you are looking for a cat which will be loving and attracting your attention by way of being active, then this breed  is just perfect for you.

Talking of relationships with other pets, for example dogs, everything depends on the temperament of the Siamese cat and a dog.

Siamese and other pets

Siamese cat – care

The Siamese cats have short fur, and therefore they do not need too much care. Even your hand  can be a comb- just wet it and comb your pet, from head to tail, always going backwards over them.  All the hair that fell out will remain on your hand.

At times it is necessary to bath the Siamese cat, clean their ears and teeth. It is recommended to make this a routine at the earliest moment possible when the Siamese is a kitten as the breed  has a natural tendency to have dental problems. It is also recommended to feed the Siamese cats  with Premium class food.

Siamese cats health problems

As a rule the Siamese cats have good health and if they are cared for in the right way, they can often live up to 20 years. However, like most breeds of cats,  the Siamese are prone to genetic diseases such as  amyloidosis of  the liver  that can result in hepatic insufficiency, also cardiomyopathy and  breast cancer.

Fortunately, all these cases are rare, as well as dental calculus, gingivitis and other dental diseases. Even more infrequently Siamese cats can suffer from “Siamese strabismus.” All of the usual illnesses faced by cats, such as serpigo, fleas, parasitic worm and similar can be cured by owners.
